18 John de Normanville has given to Melrose abbey in pure and perpetual alms a certain part of his land in the territory of Maxton [i.e., Steelmoor] contained within these marches, viz. from the west side of Grenerig downstream by the burn [the Broomhouse burn?] to the road from Newton [Longnewton] to Roxburgh and by that road up to the furrow drawn from the monksâ land of Muirhouselaw (Morhus) northwards to the same road, and by that furrow up by the great stones to Muirhouselaw, with common pasture and other easements of Steelmoor (Stele). COMMENT. Alexander IIâs confirmation is dated 4 February 1233 at Traquair: RRS, iii. no. 185. The cartularists identified the land concerned as Steelmoor, a hill-spur adjoining Muirhouselaw farm on the north-east.
19 John de Normanville, knight, has given to Valmont abbey in pure and perpetual alms for the salvation of his soul and of his father, Hugh, and his wife, Beatrice, an annual rent of 20 sous of current money from his mill of La Pierre at Mautheville, half at Michaelmas and half at mid-Lent, to provide the monks with pittances on the day of Beatriceâs obit. Warranty; corroboration. 1233 [i.e., 3 April 1233 Ã 22 April 1234]
